Preparing for Your Senior Photoshoot: A Complete Checklist

Senior year is a milestone moment in your life, marking the transition from high school to the next exciting chapter. Your senior photoshoot is a perfect opportunity to capture this special time, showcasing your unique personality and style. To ensure you’re fully prepared and can make the most of your session, here’s a comprehensive checklist to help you get ready.

1. Choose the Right Outfits

Your outfit choices can make a significant impact on the final photos. Here are some tips for selecting the perfect outfits:

  • Variety: Bring multiple outfits to showcase different aspects of your personality. Aim for a mix of casual, semi-formal, and trendy looks.

  • Colors: Choose colors that complement your skin tone and stand out against the backdrop. Avoid overly bright or neon colors that can distract from your face.

  • Comfort: Make sure your outfits are comfortable and allow you to move freely. You’ll want to feel relaxed and confident during your shoot.

  • Layers and Textures: Incorporate layers and textures to add depth and interest to your photos. Think jackets, flowy dresses or skirts, and different fabric types.

  • Seasonal Appropriateness: Consider the season when choosing your outfits. Light fabrics for summer and cozy layers for fall or winter sessions.

2. Select the Perfect Accessories

Accessories can add a personal touch to your photos and highlight your style:

  • Jewelry: Choose pieces that complement your outfits without overpowering them. Simple and elegant jewelry works best.

  • Hats and Hair Accessories: Bring hats, headbands, or hair clips that reflect your style. These can add a fun element to your photos.

  • Props: Consider bringing props that represent your hobbies or interests, such as sports equipment, musical instruments, or books.

  • Shoes: Don’t forget to bring different pairs of shoes to match your outfits. Ensure they are clean and in good condition. And consider bringing a comfortable pair of sneakers or sandals to change into between locations so you can walk comfortably and not get your good shoes dirty.

3. Grooming and Personal Care

Preparing your appearance is crucial for feeling confident and looking your best:

  • Hair: Schedule a haircut or color touch-up no sooner than a week before your shoot. This gives your hair time to settle. A fresh haircut can look awkward and unnatural in a photo.

    • Boys - even if you feel like you don’t have much facial hair, consider a shave or trim the morning of your session to avoid awkward sparse or random long hairs that will stand out in your photos.

    • Girls - fluffy and freshly clean hair will show flyaways more so consider not washing your hair a day or two before your session. It doesn’t feel as nice as freshly clean, but it does photograph better.

  • Skin: Stay hydrated and follow your skincare routine leading up to the session. Avoid trying new products that could cause breakouts. It’s also important to know that if you do have acne or any blemishes during the session, these will be removed in editing before your final images are sent to you - your skin will be perfect, so don’t stress about it.

  • Nails: Make sure your nails are clean and manicured. Neutral or clear polish works best to avoid drawing attention away from your face.

  • Makeup: If you wear makeup, practice your look beforehand to ensure it enhances your features naturally. Consider hiring a professional makeup artist for a polished finish. I can introduce you to my favorite, local hair and makeup artists, just let me know and I’ll hook you up.

4. Get Plenty of Sleep and Stay Hydrated

Feeling refreshed and energized is essential for a successful photoshoot:

  • Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep the night before your session to avoid tired eyes and dark circles.

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your shoot. Hydrated skin looks healthy and radiant.

5. Be Ready to Have Fun

A positive attitude and readiness to enjoy the experience can make all the difference:

  • Relax: Remember that this is a celebration of you! Relax and enjoy the process. I will guide you through poses and help you feel comfortable.

  • Smile and Laugh: Genuine smiles and laughter create the best photos. Think about happy moments and let your joy shine through. I will also help with this. Bad “dad jokes” and silly conversation can work wonders if you’re overthinking your smile.

  • Bring a Friend: If you feel nervous, bring a friend or family member for support. They can also help with outfit changes and keeping you relaxed. Friends and moms are also great at letting me know if your smile isn’t your “real” smile and helping make you laugh to get those best captures. The more the merrier, so don’t hesitate to invite your friends - we can even get a photo or two of your crew to help preserve those memories.

6. Logistics and Final Preparations

Don’t overlook the practical aspects of preparing for your photoshoot:

  • Pack a Bag: Prepare a bag with all your outfits, accessories, makeup, and any props you plan to use. Include water, snacks, and any touch-up items you might need. I have a handy wagon that we’ll throw everything into so you don’t have to worry about bringing too much. We’ll go over everything you have in mind before we start the session and create a game plan together.

By following this comprehensive checklist, you’ll be fully prepared for your senior photoshoot, ensuring a fun and memorable experience.
